Social trends, personal branding, and viral sh*t

Plus social media news and what's on our radar

Hi CCs. Let’s get into it!

The lie of “deinfluencing”

Influencers will never influence us to buy less stuff. It’s antithetical to the job.

“What started as a rare glimpse into what professional salespeople truly feel and believe, however, immediately became a rather ingenious sales pitch once the hashtag caught on: Instead of influencing people to buy stuff, influencers who tagged their posts “deinfluencing” were simply posting negative reviews of products they didn’t think were worth the money, and — more often than not — telling you what to buy instead (one was captioned “showing you products that can potentially help with overconsumerism!”)”

‘Social Media Trends 2024’ report by Hootsuite

The chase for ROI continues in 2024—but brands that lean into AI, entertainment, and their top-performing platforms close in on winning social media strategies.

Top takeaways:

  1. AI forces brands to redefine authenticity. It’s not about who (or what) creates your content anymore; it’s about the brand experience your content creates for the customer.

  2. Strategic brands commit to key social platforms and say goodbye to platforms that don’t move the needle —using ROI to figure out their next moves.

In case you missed it, this video went viral on TikTok after someone’s car burnt to a crisp, with the exception of her Stanley Cup (which has been a huge part of the ‘It Girl’ aesthetic for 2023), which was in perfect condition and even still had ice in it!

Stanley responded in the best, most wholesome way possible (see below).

🤳 Brand of the Week

Liquid Death’s marketing is literally always on point. I’m jealous. Below is another one of their new stunts that caught my attention as a new snowboarder myself. I love how they are not afraid to take risks and they continually innovate and develop unique partnerships to move their brand forward.

🎨 Creative Corner

One of my favorite creators on YouTube right now is Hayden Hillier-Smith who, in partnership with Jordan Orme, runs The Editing Podcast, a channel all about the art of editing video content.

They create videos from all different perspectives — from deep dive explorations of specific videos, to interviews with other editors. They really give unique insights that will get you think about storytelling in a different way.

Below is one of my favorite episodes where they interview the editors from the show, The Bear. So fun to watch!

And that’s it! Have a great rest of your week.
